Can permanent eyeliner be removed with a laser?
Yes. Permanent eyeliner is a tattoo: pigment placed in the skin along or between your lashes. The PicoMAX sends extremely short pulses of energy (measured in picoseconds, trillionths of a second) that shatter the pigment into tiny particles. Your body then clears those particles over the following weeks.
That's why the line fades gradually rather than disappearing in one visit. It's the same principle used for body tattoos and other permanent makeup. Eyeliner is only special because of where it sits.
Why do some clinics refuse to remove eyeliner?
Because the lash line is millimetres from your eye, and tattoo lasers can damage the eye if it isn't properly shielded. Some clinics only treat brows and lips, or only the "wings" of eyeliner that extend past the eye.
That caution is reasonable. Medical literature describes eye injuries from lasers used near the eye without adequate protection, and stresses that the right shield, correctly placed, matters (Dermatology Times; Review of Optometry). So the real question is not only "can it be done?" but "how will my eyes be protected?"
Safety first

How we protect your eyes
Every eyeliner removal session at Lana Skyn is done with internal eye shields. A smooth protective shield is placed gently under your eyelid, over the eye itself, so the laser energy cannot reach it. External goggles alone are not enough for the lash line, which is why we use internal shields.
Eyeliner removal at our clinic is done only by Lana or Solange. Before we start, we:
-
Ask about your eye health, recent eye surgery and medication
-
Ask you to remove contact lenses
-
Check the colour of your pigment and how far it has spread
-
Explain what you'll feel and what to expect afterwards
If something in your history makes treatment near the eye unwise, we'll tell you and won't treat that day.
What happens during an eyeliner removal session?
01
Consultation
We look at your eyeliner, talk through your goals and go over your medical history.
02
Preparation
Your face is cleansed and the internal eye shields are placed.
03
Treatment
The laser is passed carefully along the lash line. Each eye usually takes only a few minutes.
04
Aftercare
We cool the area and explain what to do over the next days.
Right after treatment, the line often turns whitish for a short time, and your eyelids may be red or puffy.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the colour of the pigment, how deep and dense it is, and how quickly your body clears it. A thin, faded line can lighten within a few sessions. Dense or layered eyeliner takes longer.
Sessions are spaced several weeks apart. We'd rather give you a realistic estimate at your consultation than promise a number online. The aim is full removal, but sometimes a faint trace remains, and we'll be honest with you about that before you start.
Does the colour of my eyeliner matter?
Yes. The colour of your eyeliner affects how well the pigment responds to the laser.
Black, blue-black or blue-grey: black and blue-black pigment usually responds well to tattoo lasers because it absorbs laser energy easily. Eyeliner that has turned blue-grey over the years is usually old black pigment that has faded.
Brown: brown and some other cosmetic pigments can contain iron oxide, which sometimes reacts differently and can darken temporarily when lasered. If your eyeliner isn't clearly black, we start with a small test area first.
Blurred or spread: eyeliner where pigment has spread past the lash line can be treated along with the original line. The spread part is often lighter, so it may fade sooner.
Is eyeliner removal right for me?
It's often a good fit if:
Your eyeliner has faded, changed colour or blurred
You want a clean base before a PMU artist redoes it
You'd simply like a natural lash line again
We'll usually advise waiting if you
Are pregnant or breastfeeding
Have an eye infection, irritation or a recent eye operation
Have a fresh tan on the area, or use medication that makes your skin sensitive to light
Have just had lash extensions, a lash lift or use lash serums
Not sure? Send us a WhatsApp with a close-up photo and we'll tell you honestly.
Will eyeliner removal affect my lashes?
It can. Eyeliner pigment sits among the lash roots, so some lashes in the treated area may shed or thin after treatment. In most cases they grow back, but we can't promise that for every lash. We want you to know this before you decide.
Aftercare for the first days
Use a cool, clean compress if your eyelids feel swollen
Don't rub your eyes or pick at any crusting
Skip eye makeup, lash extensions and lash serums until the skin has healed
Avoid saunas, swimming and intense sport for a few days
Protect the area from strong sun
Contact us straight away if your eye itself hurts, your vision changes, or redness gets worse instead of better.

Frequently asked questions
Can permanent eyeliner be removed?
Yes. Lana Skyn in Amsterdam-Noord removes permanent eyeliner, including on the full lash line, with the PicoMAX picosecond laser and internal eye shields.
Is laser eyeliner removal safe?
It can be done safely when the eye is properly shielded and the treatment is done carefully. We place internal eye shields under your eyelids at every session and check your eye health first.
Does eyeliner removal hurt?
Most people feel quick, sharp snaps along the lash line. Each eye usually takes only a few minutes.
How many sessions does eyeliner removal take?
Usually several, spaced weeks apart. Faded black eyeliner tends to need fewer sessions than dense or brown pigment. We estimate your number at the consultation.
How much does eyeliner removal cost in Amsterdam?
At Lana Skyn, eyeliner removal costs €69 per session. The total depends on how many sessions you need.
Will my lashes fall out?
Some lashes in the treated area may shed or thin. Most grow back, but not always, so we discuss this before treatment.
Can blue or faded eyeliner be removed?
Yes. Blue-grey eyeliner is usually old black pigment that has faded, and it often responds well to laser removal.
Can you remove eyeliner that has spread?
Yes. Pigment that has blurred past the lash line can be treated together with the original line.
